Project Description: During construction of Phase 1 of this new science center called “The Nucleus”, our firm was hired to complete the design of the third floor (approximately 21,000 square feet) of this project to support classrooms and provide a state-of-the-art research floor as Phase 2 of the construction. The designs and drawings were fast-tracked to allow the third level to be well under construction prior to finishing the floors below. This was critical to reducing costly expenses to access and modify (building) systems. The design/construction, drawings/permitting were completed in less than 6 months with a planned construction duration of 11 months. The third floor primarily supports approximately 10 professors conduct research in varying sciences and was designed to be flexible spaces to accommodate a wide variety of research programs and future needs.

In summary, this research floor features:

  • 4 research labs,

  • 2 support spaces,

  • 10 offices,

  • Meeting/training rooms,

  • Presentation walls in corridors,

  • Green house support space (headhouse),

  • Collaborative spaces with hoteling styled work spaces for research assistants.
