The design process for Nan Elizabeth Walsh Schow Hall, which is often referred to as NEW Hall by the Scripps College community, was the result of over 10 years of careful studies. The building was designed in the California Mediterranean Style consistent with the early buildings designed by Architect Gordan Kaufman under the supervision of Scripps College founder Ellen Browning Scripps. Mrs. Scripps insisted that dorms should feel like home, and this building had to reflect her philosophy. The building varies in height from one to three stories and includes multiple courtyards, arched walkways, and beautiful fountains. The interior of the building includes housing for 113 students in suite style arrangements with common living rooms, residential apartment for staff, a main living room featuring a fireplace, student lounge with kitchen, and a computer lab. This project was given LEED Gold status for its energy-efficient and sustainable design.
