SWAN HALL RENOVATION AND EXPANSION
Los Angeles, CA
COMPLETION DATE: 2012
OWNER: Occidental College
CONTRACTOR: Tovey/Shultz Construction, Inc.
James Swan Hall was originally designed in 1914 by LA architect Myron Hunt as a men's dormitory that had to conform to the unique topography of the site. In the 1950's the building was remodeled into its contemporary use as faculty offices. This most recent renovation addressed a number of modern needs, including: meeting current building codes for accessibility and egress; expansion and reorganization of spaces for better function; updating and enhancing the built environment and utility infrastructure; and addressing both structural and envelop deficiencies that were a result of years of seismic stress and general wear. The restoration of the exterior of the original building was completed in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, and achieved LEED Gold certification through the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
